The interesting question of relevancy

An essay that highlights over the topic of relevance

The interesting question of relevancy

I was casually browsing through short videos on Instagram. My feed was a mix of various short videos—funny, emotional, cringe-worthy, and everything in between. I kept scrolling, one video after another, until I stumbled upon a nostalgic gem. This video was a compilation of images from things I've seen, watched, played, and eaten in my past. It was titled "Things You'll Relate to If You're a 2000s Kid."

As I watched, I recalled a promise I made to myself about five years ago. I promised that when I grew older and settled into life, I'd revisit those beloved cartoon shows from my childhood. However, today, years later, I'm just not in the mood for it. Sure, I feel a warm sense of nostalgia and happiness when I remember those cartoons, but the truth is, I no longer care, and it doesn't seem relevant to me now. The word "relevant" caught my attention.

This got me thinking: why do some things lose their relevance over time? I mean, there are so many things that were incredibly relevant a decade ago, but now, they're just fragments of history. This phenomenon applies to movies, TV shows, songs, celebrities, actors, athletes, objects, stories, poems, poets—basically, everything. Of course, each has its period of relevance. It dawned on me that certain things remain relevant for thousands of years, like Yoga and Vedas. It's truly fascinating to realize this.

Then I pondered, am I relevant today? Are my stories, books, drawings, poems, the photos I've taken, the friendships I've forged, the things I've created, the memories I've cherished, and everything else about me relevant?

Will they still be relevant tomorrow, and will I be relevant tomorrow? To be honest, I don't really know. It struck me that I've been around for less than 25 years since I was born, so clearly, I wasn't relevant before that because I didn' t exist. Is it?

I wondered if there was anything that was relevant when there was absolutely nothing, I mean, literally nothing. I still don't have an answer to that.

I tried searching on the internet, but the explanations were unsatisfying. How can I believe in something I've never seen and don't truly understand?

I know there are solid reasons why the sum of all natural numbers up to infinity is -1/12, but it's beyond my grasp, and honestly, it doesn't interest me much. Similarly, the question of relevancy puzzled me.

Then I thought about whether time was relevant even when there was nothing, but it hit me—why should I care about time if there's nothing at all?

It's like wondering if you should follow traffic rules when you're the only driver in the world. I don't have a definitive answer.

Feeling a bit fatigued, I decided to brew some tea and perhaps take a nap.
