Tragedy Strikes: US Military Aircraft Crashes off Japan's Yakushima Island with Six Aboard

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, with the plane reportedly circling, catching fire, and eventually exploding before plunging into the sea. The left engine of the CV-22 Osprey was reportedly on fire during its ill-fated landing attempt.

The aircraft, believed to be en route from the Iwakuni base in the Yamaguchi region to the Kadena base in Okinawa, disappeared from radar at 14:40 local time on Wednesday, according to Japan's defence ministry. The Coast Guard received a distress call just five minutes later, confirming the crash.

Rescue efforts were swiftly initiated, with six boats and two helicopters deployed to the crash site. The helicopters later spotted what seemed to be wreckage and a life raft, heightening the tragedy's gravity.

Initial reports suggested eight people were on board, but the Coast Guard later revised the number down. Yakushima, part of Kagoshima prefecture, now stands witness to this heart-wrenching incident.
